Bernhard Schwidewski (born August 20, 1888 in Berlin ; † November 12, 1966 there ) was a German film architect and set designer .

Life

Schwidewski received training as a window dresser and interior designer. At the Berlin Art Academy he studied architecture under Hans Poelzig and graduated with a degree in engineering . He also took part in archaeological trips of the Baron de la Grone.

Bernhard Schwidewski made his first contacts with film as early as 1910 when he was working for the Gaumont production company in Paris . Shortly after the end of the First World War, he began working as an architect in German film. Schwidewski mostly set up secondary films for smaller production companies, often in collaboration with other architects. With his colleague Botho Höfer , Schwidewski temporarily owned his own company. Since the mid-30s he was hardly involved in the design or the realization of film structures. Instead, he took on leading positions in the production design departments of the production companies Terra and Tobis . In addition, Schwidewski was entrusted with a functionary post in the film department within the Reichsfilmkammer : there he worked as a division manager for film architects at the NSBO

Shortly after the end of the Second World War, Schwidewski moved to Thuringia and settled with relatives in Rudolstadt . There he tried his hand at composing operettas and designed one or the other set for the Rudolstadt theater. In 1956 Bernhard Schwidewski returned to (West) Berlin and spent his old age there.
