action

The acrobatic troupe Burry with its young artists Ziska, Armand, Frank and their mentor Atto is the greatest sensation of the Royal Circus, which captivates the enthusiastic audience every evening as part of the aerial show "Ghosts of the Night". Ziska, the female star of the group, is very much in love with her trapeze partner Frank. Armand also has an eye on the young woman, but soon realizes that he won't have a chance with her. In his desperation he throws himself off the trapeze one evening and lies dead on the floor of the ring. With Armand's passing, however, the great trapeze number of Burrys became wasted. Together with Atto, the Burrys leave the Royal Circus and join a small traveling circus. The rather inconspicuous and a little old circus director Saltarelli falls in love with Frank, but since his heart already belongs to Ziska, he lets her down. The Saltarelli then pursues Ziska with irrepressible hatred.

One evening, during the performance, the strange inventor Dr. Magirus among the spectators. He has created what is known as a radio-mechanical human, a kind of robot , who is exactly like Armand and could replace him in future air numbers. The remaining three Burrys accept the offer of the inventor who is sickly in love with Ziska and, now back in the Royal Circus, have overwhelming success with this new combination. But one day Magirus demands his (love) reward from Ziska for his work, but she rejects him. Full of anger, Dr. Magirus to take revenge on Ziska and hurl the art man from the roof of the circus into the depths in order to take back Ziska's professional foundation as he had recently given it. In this attempt, however, Magirus slips and falls himself into the depths, where he breaks his neck. Now nothing stands in the way of happiness between Frank and Ziska.
