Gypsy Rose Lee
Gypsy Rose Lee (actually Rose Louise Hovick ) (born January 8, 1911 in Seattle , † April 26, 1970 in Los Angeles ) was an American actress, writer and famous actress in burlesque shows.
Life
Rose Louise Hovick, along with her sister Ellen, later known as June Havoc , was introduced to show business by her mother at an early age. The sisters appeared in vaudeville shows, always under the influence of the dominant mother. Rose initially stood in the shadow of her sister June. As vaudeville became old-fashioned and more crude forms of entertainment emerged, Rose made a name for herself in the genre of burlesque . Her at the same time vulgar and cultivated manner and her humor made her the star of the New York burlesque shows of the Minsky brothers.
After her marriage to the technician and film producer Michael Todd , she appeared in many of his films. As a writer, she wrote the novel The G-String Murders in 1941, which was filmed in 1943 as Lady of Burlesque with Barbara Stanwyck . A son emerged from her relationship with the film director Otto Preminger . In 1957, after her mother's death, Rose published her memoir under the title Gypsy , in which she portrayed the overpowering mother who was later also accused of murder. This served Jule Styne , Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents as a template for their musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable (1959), which was also successfully filmed in 1962 under the title Gypsy - Queen of the Night .
A living legend, Rose has appeared in television movies and talk shows in her final years. She died of cancer.
