June Havoc

June Havoc (born Ellen Evangeline Hovick ; born November 8, 1912 in Vancouver , British Columbia , † March 28, 2010 in Wilton , Connecticut ) was an American actress .

Life

Driven by her ambitious mother, June Havoc took on film roles at the age of two, especially in several Hal Roach comedies from 1918 to 1924 . During those years she also appeared on stage with the legendary dancer Anna Pawlowa and eventually became a member of the ensemble of the St. Louis Municipal Opera. Besides, she tried to stay afloat as a model. After stage stops in the province June Havoc finally reached Broadway, where she made her debut in 1936.

Havoc went to Hollywood in 1941. As early as 1951 she concentrated almost entirely on her work at the theater. A little later there were also offers from television. After a guest role in the 1990 series General Hospital , June Havoc retired into private life.

In addition to her screen career, the actress impressed with her courageous advocacy for civil rights in the United States. In the McCarthy era , Havoc was one of the few filmmakers (including Danny Kaye , Humphrey Bogart , Lauren Bacall and Gene Kelly ) who stood up in Washington against the human rights violations marked by anti-communist hysteria by some politicians and demonstrated for the protection of the inviolability of political freedom .

June Havoc was married three times, including to screenwriter William Spier . She has a daughter who is also an actress. Her sister is the actress and entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee (1911-1970), who owed her enormous popularity in the USA above all to her legendary striptease appearances.

June Havoc last lived in Wilton, Connecticut.
