Claire's knee (original title: Le Genou de Claire ) is a French feature film from 1970 and the fifth part of the film cycle Six moral stories by Éric Rohmer .

action

The diplomat Jérôme spends the summer holidays before his wedding on Lake Annecy . He met Madame Walter and her daughter Laura through a long-time friend, the writer Aurora. Jérôme goes on a mountain hike with Laura and she falls a little in love with him.

A few days later, Laura's stepsister Claire arrives. Jérôme is interested in the attractive girl and develops an obsessive desire to touch her knee. The opportunity arises when Claire and Jérôme have to seek refuge in a hut during a boat trip because a thunderstorm is approaching. Jérôme tells Claire that he saw her boyfriend Gilles with another girl. Then she begins to cry and lets him go when he puts his hand on her knee.

background

Jean-Claude Brialy reports in his autobiography about the filming on Lake Annecy . According to this, Rohmer had housed the entire film crew in an old house with only one shared bathroom and stayed in a shed himself. The collaboration with Béatrice Romand was particularly difficult, who constantly interfered in the shooting and even bit him in one scene.

The other films in the cycle are The Monceau Baker (1962), The Career of Suzanne (1963), The Collector (1967), My Night at Maud (1969) and The Afternoon Love (1972).

criticism

The film-dienst praised Rohmer's analysis of “feelings and behaviors of different generations” in its contemporary film review as “[p] sychologically extremely subtle and discreet”. The film is a "case study of narcissistic self-love".

"Rich in words, light, clever", said Cinema and also described the film as "[t] he wonderful fifth emotional show from Rohmer's 'Moral Tales'".

Awards

The film won the prestigious Prix Louis-Delluc in 1970 , and one year later the main prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival . In 1972, Claire's Knee with the Prix Méliès the Association Française de la Critique de Cinéma voted the best French film, while Rohmer's work as a director in the United States also was echoed by the critics and the prices of the National Board of Review as Best Foreign Language Film and the National Society of Film Critics for Best Film of the Year .
