action
Félicie falls in love with Charles while on vacation in Brittany. However, a mishap happened when she exchanged her address. Five years later in winter, Félicie, who works as a hairdresser in a Paris suburb and is now a single mother of a daughter, is looking for a new lover. She is torn between the hairdresser Maxence and the librarian Loïc. Maxence takes the opportunity to open his own salon in Nevers and Félicie decides to go with him, but soon leaves and returns to Paris. When Loïc invites her to a performance of Shakespeare's Winter Tale , she realizes that he is too intellectual for her. Charles reappears around Christmas and, since she suspects that Charles is the father of her child, she decides for him.
criticism
"The second film from the cycle of four seasons" deals in the usual light and dialogue-oriented manner with Rohmer's general theme - the conditions of love and love as a prerequisite for happiness. Artfully constructed, but equally realistic. "
"" Winter's Tale ": a theater film. As always with Rohmer, there is a lot of talk: about Pascal and Plato, about karma and rebirth. The figures turn and twist in the talk like prisoners in their chains. They tell everything and explain nothing. But the more banal the conversations get, the more closely the camera watches. She captures the moments of despair and uncertainty that flicker across Félica's face before deciding. Then she jumps back like a frightened bystander. It's a game where every setting wins. "
- Roger Ebert gives the film four out of four points and writes: "To our astonishment we find that the purpose of the winter fairy tale is not to determine whether Felicie finds love, but to explore whether trust and faith can influence our fates. "
