Pauline am Strand (original title Pauline à la plage ) is a French feature film from 1983 and the third part of the cycle of comedies and proverbs by Éric Rohmer .
action
15-year-old Pauline travels to Normandy with her recently divorced cousin Marion, who is about ten years her senior, to spend the rest of the summer holidays in the family's holiday home. On the beach they meet Pierre, a former lover of Marion, and meet his friend Henri, who is in his mid-30s. Henri invites her to his home for dinner, and Marion, looking for a new love, spends the night with him.
While Pierre Marion is teaching windsurfing, Pauline meets 17-year-old Sylvain on the beach. Marion is able to get rid of Pierre, who had already declared his love for her the night before, and meets with Henri again. She tries to pair Pierre with Pauline, but is unsuccessful: Pauline finds Pierre too old, while he is so fixated on Marion that he is not interested in any other girl. The next day, Henri invites Pauline and Sylvain, who have become friends, to his home. Marion watches the two youngsters as they lie on the bed together and kiss. She tells Henri about it because she feels responsible for Pauline.
Marion and Pauline go on a trip to Mont Saint-Michel , Henri and Sylvain meet Louisette, a candy seller, on the beach and go back to Henri. Sylvain stays in front of the television while Henri sleeps with Louisette, Louisette being seen by Pierre, who more or less by chance passes the house. When Marion returns, Sylvain warns Henri, who, however, locks him in the bathroom with Louisette, giving Marion the impression that the two of them had enjoyed themselves. When she asked: "Are you renting your bed now?" Henri replies hypocritically that he did not notice how the two went upstairs.
Pierre visits Marion and tells her that he saw Louisette in Henri's bedroom. Marion can convince him that Louisette slept with Sylvain, which Pierre then tells Pauline, who falls from the clouds and doesn't want to see Sylvain anymore. Later, Louisette tells Pierre the truth. Sylvain confronts Henri and furiously accuses him of having destroyed his romance with Pauline. The next day Marion has to go to Paris, Pierre and Henri clarify Pauline about the misunderstanding and apologize to her and Sylvain. Pauline's romantic feelings for Sylvain seem to have cooled down anyway.
Pauline, who stayed at Henri's house, wakes up when he kisses her leg. With a strong kick she unmistakably rejects the advances, but both take the matter with humor. At breakfast, Henri explains to her that he will be traveling to Quiberon and leaving Marion behind. Disappointed by their male acquaintances, Pauline and Marion decide to return to Paris early.
background
- The film was shot in Carolles- Plage near Granville in Normandy .
- Amanda Langlet , who makes her film debut as Pauline, can also be seen in other films by Éric Rohmer: in Sommer (1996) as Margot, an ethnology student, and in Triple Agent (2004) as Janine.
- The poster above Pauline's bed in Henri's house is a reproduction of the painting La Blouse roumaine by Henri Matisse . Before filming began, Rohmer had seen the reproduction in a bookstore and had Matisse influenced the visual design of the film.
- As a “proverb”, Rohmer added a quote from Chrétien de Troyes to the film : “Qui trop parole il se mesfait.” (“Whoever talks too much loses himself.”)
- The other films in the Comedy and Proverbs cycle are: The Aviator's Wife or You Can't Think of Nothing (1981), The Beautiful Wedding (1982), Full Moon Nights (1984), The Green Shine (1986) and My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (1986 ).
criticism
"A feather-light, but precise and astute staged game about role models, deceptive behaviors and the everyday contradiction between speech and action - exciting and amusing despite its wealth of dialogues," said the lexicon of international film .
Awards
Pauline am Strand won a Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival in 1983 and the French Critics' Prize Prix Méliès for Best French Film.
