The baker of Monceau (original title: La Boulangère de Monceau ) is a French short film from 1962 and the first part of the cycle Six moral stories by Éric Rohmer . The short film was shot in black and white and in 16 mm format and after editing it was set to music and provided with a comment (speaker: Bertrand Tavernier ).
action
The film takes place in Paris , around the Carrefour Villiers in the 17th arrondissement . The narrator, a law student shortly before his exams, falls in love with Sylvie, whom he meets regularly on the way from his apartment to dinner. His friend Schmidt encourages him to speak to Sylvie, which he then does. She shows interest, but initially declines an invitation to a café. From that day on he doesn't meet her anymore and so he starts looking for her.
To increase the likelihood of a reunion, the narrator skips dinner for the next few weeks and spends this time in the district's market. In a bakery he met the saleswoman Jacqueline and made an appointment with her. At that moment, Sylvie reappears, who had a leg in a cast after an accident and could only watch the narrator from her apartment across from the bakery. He moves the saleswoman and marries Sylvie.
Remarks
The bird's-eye view at the beginning of the film, which is atypical for Rohmer, is only explained towards the end: it is Sylvie's perspective, who watches the street from her apartment.
The other films in the cycle are The Career of Suzanne (1963), The Collector (1967), My Night with Maud (1969), Claire's Knie (1970) and The Afternoon Love (1972).
