Bruno Barbey

Bruno Barbey (born February 13, 1941 in Morocco , † November 9, 2020 in Orbais-l'Abbaye ) was a French photographer . He was a member of the Magnum photo agency . Within 40 years he has traveled to all continents and created photo reports mainly of warlike events.

Life

Bruno Barbey spent his childhood in Morocco. At the age of 16 he got his pilot's license and learned to parachute. Then he went to Paris to the Lycee Henry IV . From 1959 to 1960 he studied graphics and photography at the Ecole des Arts et Métiers in Vevey , Switzerland .

During the sixties, he was the publisher Editions recontre in Lausanne tasked photo series to create in Europe and Africa. He traveled to Naples , the Camargue , Portugal , Scotland , Kenya and Kuwait . Each of his travels resulted in a book that he illustrated. In 1968 he was accepted as a full member of the Magnum photo agency, the year in which he documented in detail the workers' and student unrest in Paris with his camera. In Tokyo it was also about student unrest. Together with the writer Jean Genet he reported from Palestine for the magazine Zoom and he portrayed Nasser in Egypt.

From 1979 to 1981 he traveled through Poland and brought back enough material for a book. His photo reports have been printed worldwide, including Life , Paris Match , the Stern , Geo and National Geographic . He ventured into war or civil war zones: the battles of Biafra with Nigeria , Vietnam , the Middle East , Bangladesh , Cambodia , Northern Ireland and Iraq . He protested against being classified as a war photographer .

On April 13, 2016, Barbey was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts . Today Barbey's pictures are kept in many museums in different countries. The largest part of his collection is with the collection of the Magnum photo agency in the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas . His wife, the filmmaker Caroline Thiénot Barbey, provides insights into his work in her films.

Bruno Barbey died on November 9, 2020 at the age of 79 in Orbais-l'Abbaye .
