Tahar Ben Jelloun (born December 1, 1947 in Fès ) is a French-speaking Moroccan writer and psychotherapist and is considered the most important representative of French-language literature from the Maghreb .

Life

After attending an Arabic-Francophone elementary school, Tahar Ben Jelloun moved at the age of 18 from his birthplace, Fez, to Tangier to attend a French high school ( Lycée ). In 1963 he began to study philosophy at the Muhammad V University in Rabat , where he also wrote his first poems, which were published in the anthology Hommes sous linceul de silence in 1971. After completing his studies, he taught philosophy in Morocco, but had to emigrate to France in 1971 because the teaching of philosophy was Arabized and he was not trained for it. There he received his doctorate in social psychiatry in 1975 , which also influenced his works (e.g. La Réclusion solitaire , 1976). From 1972 he wrote regularly for Le Monde .

In the following years Ben Jelloun published numerous novels , including 1985 L'Enfant de sable , with which he became famous. La Nuit Sacrée , the sequel to Enfant de sable , was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1987 . This made Ben Jelloun the first author from North Africa to receive this award.

In 1994 he was awarded the Grand Prix littéraire du Maghreb , with which he finally asserted himself as a French author.

In June 2004 Ben Jelloun received the Irish IMPAC literary prize endowed with 100,000 euros for his book Cette aveuglante absence de lumière (German: “The Silence of Light”), in which he describes the conditions in the - now closed - Tazmamart prison camp . The novel is based on a true story.

Jelloun's works have been translated into numerous languages, such as L'Enfant de sable and La Nuit sacrée in 43 languages or Le Racisme expliqué à ma fille in 25 languages. His novel Les Raisins de la galère was also required in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony for the central high school diploma in French in 2008 and 2009.

Tahar Ben Jelloun lives in Paris with his wife and daughter Mérième, for whom he has written several educational books . In Le Racisme expliqué à ma fille (German: "Papa, what is a stranger?") From 1997, he explains to his daughter - and all other interested parties - sensitively and yet objectively why racism arises and how it can be counteracted. This children's book and L'Islam expliqué aux enfants (German: “Papa, what is Islam?”), Both of which Jelloun wrote as an essay , soon became international bestsellers .

In 1988 Ben Jelloun was made a Knight and in 2008 a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor . He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Montreal on June 19 .

In 2011 Tahar Ben Jelloun wrote the work Arab Spring , in which he dealt with the protests in the Arab world and for which he was awarded the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize of the city of Osnabrück in the same year .
