action

Magali, a winemaker in the Ardèche region , often discusses the advantages and disadvantages of country life with her friend Isabelle, a bookseller. Magali is a widow and has a son and a daughter. Since she lives in the country, there are hardly any opportunities for her to meet a new man. Rosine, the friend of Magali's son Leo, is torn between two men: Étienne, her former philosophy teacher from high school, and Leo. She wants Étienne Magali to marry and only have a platonic relationship with her. Isabelle, on the other hand, tries to persuade Magali to place a personal ad. Since she absolutely rejects personals, Isabelle gives up the ad in her place. She meets with Gérald, who responded to the ad. After the second meeting, Isabelle points out to him that she lied to him and is looking for a partner for Magali, of whom she shows Gérald photos.

At a wedding party, Gérald gets into conversation with Magali. Since Leo Magalis has borrowed a car, Isabelle offers that Gérald Magali drive home. During the trip, Magali thought that Isabelle might have arranged this meeting and asks Gérald to only drive her to the next train station. Gérald then returns to the party. Magali also takes a taxi back to Isabelle's party. There she confronts Isabelle. Isabelle explains to Magali and tells her that she has a good impression of Gérald. Magali recognizes her luck and returns to the dance company with Gérald, who has just entered the room.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the film as “lively narrated”, although despite all the relaxedness it never takes the “existential topic of the search for happiness” lightly. He was "carefully staged"; With a "discreet camera and the focus on the pointed dialogues" he offers subtle entertainment that invites you to "reflect and reconsider".

The film magazine Schnitt wrote that Rohmer led "carefree and apparently by the hand" through the story and accompanied his characters to their little everyday occurrences. However, Éric Rohmer would advise against anyone who is bored with French films. However, those who like it “quiet and romantic” and who “all the good people” don't bother, will like autumn history .

Cinema thinks the conversations between Magali and her friends are "more boring than the small talk between neighbors in the stairwell". The conclusion is: "A chatty evening at the cinema."

Roger Ebert gives the film four out of four points and writes: "Although I like romantic Hollywood comedies like Notting Hill , it is as if they are galoshes compared to the clever joke of a film like Fall History .
