The career of Suzanne (original title: La Carrière de Suzanne ) is a French feature film from 1963 and the second part of the film cycle Six moral stories by Éric Rohmer . The medium-length black and white film was shot in 16mm format.

action

Bertrand, the storyteller, studies pharmacy in Paris. Together with his friend Guillaume, a political science student, he met Suzanne in the “Le Luco” café, who works for the national tuberculosis committee and attends evening courses in Italian. Guillaume invites Suzanne to a party at his mother's house. During the course of the evening he only deals with Sophie, a student from Ireland, while Bertrand withdraws and observes the two - especially Suzanne's reaction. After the party, Suzanne and Bertrand stay with Guillaume and they sleep together. The next morning, Bertrand is the first to leave the house, feeling uncomfortable in his role as an accomplice.

Suzanne visits Bertrand to get back in touch with Guillaume. Bertrand is not enthusiastic about it because he is not interested in it; but he lets her invite him to a celebration. Guillaume finds out about it and lets her stand for a while.

After returning from the Easter holidays with his family, Bertrand hides some money for a new suit in a book. Guillaume takes the bills - Bertrand suspects Suzanne. When Bertrand, who is now in a relationship with Sophie, learns that Suzanne is going to marry a fellow student, his image of her changes: now he finds her attractive.

criticism

The lexicon of international films said that the film “is not yet perfect in terms of the staging, but shows the handwriting and intent of the director: Rohmer celebrates the victory of 'moral instinct' against calculating calculation”. It is about "an intellectual exercise full of psychological arabesques".

Remarks

The other films in the cycle are the short film Die Bäckerin von Monceau (1962) and the feature films The Collector (1967), My Night with Maud (1969), Claire's Knie (1970) and Love in the Afternoon (1972).
