The collector (original title: La Collectionneuse ) is a French feature film from 1967 and the third part of the film cycle Six moral stories by Éric Rohmer (the fourth part in the order of the stories). A man gets to know a young girl with whom he does not actually want to get involved, but which is increasingly difficult for him.

action

The art dealer Adrien wants to spend the summer with his friend Daniel in a villa on the Mediterranean Sea that a mutual friend has given them. The young Haydée will soon be staying there. Adrien is not right, he just fell out with his girlfriend, who did not want to accompany him to the sea and instead spends the summer in London. Adrien, who sees himself as a modern dandy , wants to sell a Chinese vase to a friend. In addition, he has decided to spend the time in the villa doing nothing. However, his plans are thwarted by Haydée, who meets a new lover every day - a provocation for the two men who live alone.

Soon Adrien's thoughts only revolve around the girl he thinks she wants to seduce him. But Haydée begins a love affair with Daniel, and the mood of the three gets worse and worse. Finally Daniel leaves and Adrien and Haydée make up. The art collector Sam appears and buys the vase. To encourage him to finance a gallery for him, Adrien persuades Haydée to spend a day with Sam, but remains uncertain whether Haydée has slept with Sam. On the way back to the villa, Adrien is looking forward to spending the last week of vacation with the girl as a perfect affair. On the way, Haydée meets acquaintances who she invite to Rome, and Adrien - out of a spontaneous inspiration - lets the girl back with her acquaintances and returns alone to the empty villa.

But his hope of finally recovering is not fulfilled. Everywhere he feels reminded of Haydée. In the end, he called to inquire about flights from Nice to London to see his girlfriend again.

  • Adrien's voiceover on everyday events and the self-assessment of the main character give the film the character of a diary . For Adrien, who justifies his actions as part of a philosophy of life, Haydée appears to be a systematic and well-organized collector of lovers.
  • The three main actors Patrick Bauchau, Haydée Politoff and Daniel Pommereulle improvised their dialogues over long distances, which is why they were also included as collaborators on the script.
  • The other films in the cycle are the short film Die Bäckerin von Monceau (1962) and the feature films The Career of Suzanne (1963), My Night with Maud (1969), Claire's Knie (1970) and Love in the Afternoon (1972).

Awards

The film won the Silver Bear as a special jury prize and the prize for the best film for young people at the 1967 Berlinale ; he was also nominated for the Golden Bear .
