Didier Sandre (born August 17, 1946 in Paris ) is a French actor and theater director.

life and career

Didier Sandre was born in 1946 in Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) in the greater Paris area into a Protestant family; he was the youngest of twelve siblings. His father was an employee, his grandfather a pastor at the Lutheran Church across from the Théâtre Gérard-Philipe. He attended the École Estienne in Paris, but rarely attended classes and instead spent his time in a cinema on the Champs-Élysées until, to the surprise of his parents, he was expelled from school.

He left his parents' house, got by with jobs on various Parisian theaters, suffered a breakdown during the May riots in Paris and was admitted to psychiatry. After his release, he first took a job in an office. At the pressure of friends, he signed up for an audition with Catherine Dasté (* 1928), who was involved with her La pomme verte troupe in children's and youth theater and was mainly on the road to schools and youth institutions. Dasté took him on in their troupe, Sandre gave up his office job and made youth theater from 1968 to 1972.

From 1973 he had engagements at theater festivals and on smaller stages. In 1975 he had his stage premiere at Chaillot with the role of Hippolyte in the classic Phèdre by Jean Racine . From then on there was a steep upward trend in his stage career. He played prime roles for actors in plays from Sophocles, Moliere, Racine and Corneille, Shakespeare to Ibsen, Schnitzler or Genet and Dürrenmatt. In 1987 he played in Avignon in the spectacular production of the play The silk shoe by Paul Claudel by Antoine Vitez (1920–1990) the male lead (Don Rodrigue). The piece was performed in the courtyard of the Papal Palace in Avignon , lasted eight hours and lasted two days, as Vitez had the entire text play.

In the same year he was awarded the Prix de la critique for best actor for his portrayal of Madame de Montreuil in Madame de Sade by Yukio Mishima , as well as for his role as Count Almaviva in the wedding of Figaro of Marivaux , which gave him his first nomination for the Molière . He received another nomination in 1997 for the impersonation of Arthur Goring in Oscar Wilde's comedy The Perfect Husband , staged by Adrian Brine, which then went on a European tour. In 2001 he played Titus in the tragedy Bérénice by Racine. The piece was shown after performances at the festivals in Avigon and Perpignan at the Chaillot and then also went on a European tour.

In 2016, Ivo van Hove directed his stage version of the film Die Verdammten by Luchino Visconti under the title Les dammés , Sandre played Baron Joachim von Essenbeck. After the premiere in Avignon, the piece was shown in 2017 in the Salle Richelieu of the Comédie française, in 2018 in New York and finally at the Barbican in London.

Didier Sandre has played a large number of brilliant roles in French and European classics in his long theater career. a. worked with directors such as Luc Bondy , Patrice Chéreau , Hans-Peter Cloos, Armand Gatti , Ivo van Hove, Denis Podalydès , Eric Ruf , Giorgio Strehler , Antoine Vitez and Lambert Wilson .

He made his first appearance on French television in 1973 in the film La dérobade . Since then, he has acted occasionally in French feature films and regularly in French television films and series. He embodied the Baron de Charlus in the two-part television series À la recherche du temps perdu (2011), directed by Nina Companéez .

In 2014, Sandre became a member of the Comédie-Française .
