Hijo de la luna ( Spanish : "Child of the Moon" or "Child of Luna") is a song published in 1986 by the Spanish band Mecano . The text pretends to tell an old legend. It is thematized how Luna , the mythical female figure of the moon, comes to a human child. The song, written by José María Cano , has been recorded by various musicians and bands in their own versions. The commercially most successful cover version in Germany is by Loona .

A gypsy begged Luna all night long to give her a husband. Eventually she was granted the wish. She should get a dark-skinned gypsy husband. But Luna asked for something in return. She wanted the firstborn child . It is noted: a woman who is willing to give away her unborn child just so as not to be alone does not love it.
The child was born, but it was not dark-skinned, but light like the skin of an ermine , with gray eyes, just a child of the moon. The gypsy believed in sorcery or adultery and stabbed his wife with a knife. He took the child up a mountain and left it there.
The child stayed there and lived on. He was fine on the nights of the full moon , and when he was crying, the Luna (figuratively) took off in her shape as the moon to be a cradle for the child.
In the chorus, Luna is accused: "Luna, want to be a mother but can't find love that makes you a woman, tell me, silver moon, what do you want with a child made of skin (and bones)?"

The song was first published in 1986 by the group Mecano , in Germany as a single only in 1989 and 1991 again as "Dis moi lune d'argent" on the French edition of the album Aidalai . The piece was later covered by Montserrat Caballé (1994) . The best-known version in Germany comes from Loona in 1998. From December 28, 1998 to January 11, 1999, it was the number one hit in Germany . Around the same time, the title reached number two in the Swiss charts and number three in the Austrian charts .
The song was later interpreted by Sarah Brightman (2000), Mario Frangoulis (2002) and Belle Pérez (2002), among others . Rockier variants come from the Celtic rock formation Lyriel (2006) and the metal bands Mors Principium Est (2003) and Stravaganzza (2006) and Haggard (2008). The former Mecano singer Ana Torroja recorded the title again in a new version in 2006. The Finnish singer Katra Solopuro released a Finnish version called Kuunpoika on the album Beast Within in August 2008 with her gothic metal group Katra . In 2010 the title appeared in a German version on the CD Zeitlos sung by Vicky Leandros , texted by Doris Decker and Max Hopp . An arrangement for a vocal ensemble appeared in 2003 on the album Follow That Star by the British band The Gents with the Marimba Quartet Carrefour. The SixPacks from Bayreuth created an a cappella version with a counter-tenor voice that matches the media flair of the piece.
