Mors Principium Est ( lat .: Death is [only] the beginning ) is a melodic death metal band founded in Pori , Finland in 1999 .
Band history
In 1999 Mors Principium Est was founded by Jori Haukio, Jarkko Kokko and Toni Nummelin in Pori, Finland. They started without a drummer, but that same year Mikko joined the band. Jori took over lead guitar and vocals, Jarkko played rhythm guitar and Toni keyboard. For a while the band played in this constellation - but at the beginning of 2000 Jori had had enough of singing and the band had to find a new singer. At this point, Ville Viljanen had just left his former band and joined Mors Principium Est.
The first demo was recorded without a bass player, but after Listenable Records became aware of the band, they recorded Teemu in 2001. In 2002 the Finns finally signed a contract for three albums. This contract was fulfilled with the albums "Inhumanity" and "The Unborn" in 2003 and 2005 and the release of "Liberation = Termination" in March 2007. With the second album also ended the membership of lead guitarist and main songwriter Jori, who had decided to leave the band. A mutual friend, Karri Kuisma, was hired as a session guitarist, but a replacement for Jori is still being sought.
style
The style of Mors Principium Est is very different from most other melodic death metal bands. A characteristic is that the band keeps a high tempo almost continuously with few slow passages in their songs. Sometimes the transitions between the individual songs are fluid. Another peculiarity are the often two-part guitar solos, supported by a keyboard and demanding drum figures. Most of the vocals grow rhythmically , but in a few songs ( Pure , The Animal Within ) a female voice can also be heard. Comparisons with In Flames are sometimes made, but the style of Mors Principium Est is a lot faster and more brutal - and a bit more "classic".
