action

Evie Jackson works in a small town post office. The employee is known to be unfriendly and therefore doesn't have very many friends. Evie travels to New York to attend a seminar. In the hotel she meets the greeting card seller Harry Mork. Harry is friends with the widow Phyllis and is looking forward to settling down soon.

Like many other men, Harry pays little attention to Evie. But after an unfortunate appointment with the newspaper seller June, he accepts Evie's invitation to a party. To Harry's amazement, he likes Evie's company and soon she falls in love with him. Harry sees her as a friend and shows her the apartment he wants to move into with Phyllis. Evie goes sadly to the train station to return to her small town.

Phyllis visits Harry in New York. She takes a look at the new apartment with Harry, where Phyllis' son Patrick is studying with his girlfriend Zola. Phyllis learns that her son wants to stay. Phyllis is tired of housekeeping and prefers to stay in hotels where the work is done for her. Harry realizes that Phyllis only wants to marry him to escape these duties and her son's upbringing. Harry leaves Phyllis and rushes to the train station to prevent Evie's departure.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the film as a "solidly staged romantic comedy".

Bosley Crowthers of the New York Times found the film to be a stale, dull and humorless presumption of what the producers dared to describe as "cheerful and sophisticated comedy".
