action

In the 1970s in Harlem. The 22-year-old artisan Alonzo Hunt, called Fonny, and the 19-year-old saleswoman Clementine Rivers, called Tish, are lovers. When Fonny is falsely accused of raping Puerto Rican Victoria Rogers even though he has an alibi and could not have been anywhere near the crime scene, he goes to jail. There Tish visits him and tells him that she is pregnant. With great confidence, she explains to him that she will take him out before the baby is born. Tish's mother, Sharon, her father, Joseph, and her older sister, Ernestine, take the news of the pregnancy positively. It looks different with Fonny's family when they inform them about it. There is a dispute between Tish's family and Fonny's mother Alice and the two sisters Sheila and Adrienne, in which many bad words are spoken. Fonny's mother thinks Tish is not good enough for her son and believes the child was begotten in sin.

Tish and Daniel can give him an alibi for the evening, but his best friend always ends up in jail. Through him, Fonny had already heard how easy it was for an African American to end up in jail for no reason and that there was no end to the violence there either. Now Fonny experiences this firsthand and becomes more and more desperate. Tish's family and Fonny's father, Frank, do everything possible to prove his innocence. After Joseph and Frank earn enough money by selling stolen clothes, Sharon flies to Puerto Rico , where rape victim Victoria Rogers has fled to dissuade her from giving evidence. This fails and Victoria goes into hiding, which further delays the trial of Fonny. Sharon helps her daughter give birth to a son. Fonny agrees with the prosecutor on a reduced sentence and pleads guilty, because now his testimony is against that of Officer Bell, the second main witness.

Even years later, Tish did not end the relationship, and she and their son Alonzo regularly visit Fonny in prison.

production

Literary template

"When society falls apart in a collective sense, the smaller human unit becomes more and more important."

- Joyce Carol Oates on the key message in James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk
The film is based on the novel If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin

The film is based on the 1974 novel If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin. Baldwin was inspired by the case of his friend Tony Maynard, who was charged with a murder he did not commit and spent six years in prison. Baldwin believed that the US prison system was in some ways a continuation of slavery by other means.

The writer Joyce Carol Oates stated in the New York Times shortly after the publication of Baldwin's novel that Baldwin had had a career as a writer that was actually not one. In recent years he has been both praised and denounced for the wrong reasons. In some circles his work has even been praised, possibly without having been read, which must be the worst fate for a serious writer, according to Oates. Baldwin's story is so obviously based on reality that it is perceived as timeless, according to Oates. If Beale Street Could Talk is a very moving homage to love, not just the love between a man and a woman, but also the love between members of a family. The lean narrative manages to be many things at the same time, is almost poetically constructed and can certainly be read as a kind of allegory that rejects conventional outbreaks of violence and prefers to emphasize the ephemeral nature of our life, Oates continued.

A 22-year-old black man, a sculptor, is arrested in the novel and imprisoned for an alleged crime of rape of a Puerto Rican woman, despite not doing the crime. In a confrontation, he is the only black man in a row, and the distraught woman who identifies him appears to have been influenced by a white cop. The fact that his fiancée Tish is pregnant saves the man from becoming completely desperate. At the end of the novel, Fonny is released on bail and his trial is postponed indefinitely. Now he is neither free nor imprisoned, but can at least return to the world of the living. At almost the same time as Fonny was released, his father committed suicide.

Despite the partly tragic end, the novel is ultimately characterized by optimism, so Oates, as it emphasizes the strong ties between members of an oppressed minority, especially between family members, which they probably would not have experienced in happier times, Oates believes: "If the Society in the collective sense falls apart, the smaller human unit becomes more and more important. ”Thomas Schultze von Blickpunkt: Film notes that If Beale Street Could Talk is of course an indictment, a plea for the importance of black life long before Black Lives Matter , but more than that it's about the glue that holds everything together, the importance of family in the face of insurmountable hurdles.

The novel was published in 1994 under the German title Beale Street Blues in a translation by Nils Thomas Lindquist by Rowohlt. On July 20, 2018 it was published by dtv Verlagsgesellschaft in a new translation by Miriam Mandelkow, also with the German title Beale Street Blues .

Staff and film construction

Directed by Barry Jenkins , who also adapted Baldwin's novel for the film. Like its Moonlight , the film was produced by Adele Romanski . Eric Kohn of IndieWire explains that Baldwin's dynamic characterization of black life was based on a distinctive language and precise imagery that defined his sharp, critical voice and was also reflected in Jenkins' film. The director starts the film with a quote from Baldwin. A fade-in in the opening credits reads: "Every black in the US was born on Beale Street, in the black district of any American city - whether in Jackson, Mississippi or Harlem, New York: Beale Street is our heritage."

Like the novel, the film follows Tish's perspective, with her voiceover leading through a story full of time leaps. The film contains numerous flashbacks that show Tish and Fonny's life together so far, scenes from their childhood, when they sit in the bathtub, how they stroll, how he lovingly prepared their first time, how they talked about the Jewish realtor Levy for their first shared apartment and fathered their child that night. Several times in the film there are black and white photos showing the encounter between African Americans and white police officers. In an interview with Philipp Bühler from kinofenster.de , Jenkins explained that her visual research on the film was largely based on photographs, such as the works of Gordon Parks and Roy DeCarava, and that they were also based on the black and white photo called "Ellen Crying" came across a series of photos taken by parks for LIFE magazine , which illustrates Tish's tale of the "children of our time" in the film. The second series of photos in the film was intended to indicate what happened to these children, says Jenkins: "They became the men and women who are now fighting the system."

While Fonny's father ultimately kills himself in the novel, Jenkins decided to leave this out in his film. Oswald Iten from the Filmbulletin thinks it is logical that Jenkins should replace the melodramatic finale of the novel with an epilogue and end the film more forgiving than ironic with Billy Preston's soul version of the unofficial American hymn My Country, 'Tis of Thee , with Let 's promise of freedom freedom ring! Martin Luther King Jr. completed his most famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Jenkins said the book was a lot more bitter and angry than the movie, in which he was more on the side of love, family, and romance. A part of black life in the USA has always been family, love and community in the book: “That is the idea behind Beale Street as a place in Memphis, New Orleans, Los Angeles or Harlem. Baldwin is ultimately saying that it is precisely this love that has enabled black Americans to build communities. "

She plays Tish's sister Ernestine. Stephan James plays Tish's fiancé Fonny Hunt. Regina King joined the crew in October . She plays Tish's mother, Sharon. Colman Domingo plays Mr. Joseph Rivers, Tish's loving father, who makes his daughter's crusade his own. In the same month, a casting call was made to look for young actors. In November 2017, the cast of Diego Luna became known. He plays Pedrocito, a friend of Fonny's who works in a Spanish restaurant. Filming began on October 16, 2017. The film was shot in New York. Further recordings were made in Puerto Rico. As with Moonlight , Jenkins worked again with cinematographer James Laxton and with film editors Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders on the film .

Film music. Marketing and Publishing

In March 2018 it was announced that Nicholas Britell would compose the film music. Jenkins and Britell had previously worked closely on the film Moonlight . While Jenkins was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2017 Academy Awards , Britell was nominated for Best Score. Chris Evangelista from Slash Film says Brittel's music is tremendously passionate and he manages to find just the right notes to bring tears to your eyes: “The music is just so incredibly beautiful - it swells up and builds up to the point where it feels like it's just bursting with pure electrical energy. The orchestral score is practically a character itself, so omnipresent and imposing. ”Britell again uses strings in the music , as in the music for the film Moonlight , but this time with jazz sounds. This musical direction was also important as the namesake for the novel for the film. For the title of James Baldwin If Beale Street Could Talk , the author borrowed a line from the jazz song Beale Street Blues by WC Handy , the latter wrote in 1916 and became a jazz standard, so Marietta Steinhart of time online , "All niggers come from Beale Street, ”wrote Baldwin in a preliminary remark to the novel,“ Beale Street is our legacy. ”Beale Street, actually a street in Memphis, had become a metaphor for the world into which blacks were being pushed.

A first teaser for If Beale Street Could Talk was published on August 2, 2018. On this date James Baldwin would have celebrated his 94th birthday. The film celebrated its world premiere on September 9, 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival . In October 2018, it was shown at the New York Film Festival , where it premiered in the US. On December 14, 2018, it was released in selected US cinemas. Barry Jenkins adapted and directed James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk for the film

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter says that when James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk was screened , Barry Jenkins once again found himself more than a gorgeous visual stylist, but also as a storyteller of gripping emotional intensity, who has inexhaustible depths in his characters can layer, it has been proven, just as often with a silent look as with words. The film is about the dignity of blacks and the unifying power of love as a survival mechanism. He celebrates the strengthening bond between men and women, but also the deep bond between family, friends and the community, according to Rooney. Jenkins weave scenes from the time Fonny and Tish's relationship flourished into the narrative, and this juxtaposition of their tender romantic idyll and the fear that accompanies their litigation gives the film weight alongside its rising sensuality. The parallel timelines were treated with ease by the film editors Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders , according to Rooney, and the tangible chemistry between Kiki Layne and Stephan James made Tish and Fonny undeniably the centerpiece of the film. The exquisite stage and costume design of the early 1970s, together with the graceful, always meticulously calibrated movement of James Laxton's camera , made for a unique, seductive visual experience, according to Rooney: "Faces have rarely been photographed so lovingly."

Indie Wire's Eric Kohn thinks Jenkins has retained his own deep, expressionist aesthetic in his successor to Moonlight , with luscious colors and charming faces that speak volumes in a few words, resulting in a fascinating hybrid experience when the past and present are combined mesmerizing burst of creative passion.

Martin Schwickert of the Tagesspiegel remarks that the film does not work with common indignation patterns: "The fact that an African American innocently ends up in jail is a normal racist condition for the characters." Years ago, so Schwickert, and in this concept of offensive romanticization, every single shot is a declaration of love to the characters and also to the main actors KiKi Layne and Stephan James : "The close-ups that Jenkins knows how to set up like no one else. reach straight to the heart. At the same time, the film is the most powerful cinematic commitment one can imagine for the Black Lives Matter campaign. "

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 20.6 million.

Use in school lessons

In March 2019, Beale Street was presented by kinofenster.de as "Film of the Month". In addition, the online portal recommends him for the subjects German, English, history, politics, social studies / community studies , ethics and art and offers materials for the film for the classroom. There Esther Buss writes that the story of Tish and Fonny in their description of everyday experiences such as oppression and discrimination is the story of all African-Americans, and that institutional racism is reflected not least in the prison statistics: “In 2016, 33 percent of inmates were in US prisons black (about 12 percent of the population) ”.
