Teyonah Parris is an American actress .

Life

Parris grew up in Hopkins, South Carolina . After a supporting role in the television series Good Wife and a minor role in the film How Do You Know It's Love , Parris received a role in the television series Mad Men in 2012 , where she played the role of Dawn Chambers as Don Draper's first African-American secretary. Together with her colleagues, Parris was nominated for this at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2013 in the category Best Acting Ensemble in a TV Series - Drama . In 2014, Parris received her first lead role in Dear White People , and in 2015 she received the lead role of Lysistrata in Spike Lee's film Chi-Raq . She plays a resident of Chicago who tries to implement her pacifist vision by calling for a sex boycott and to free the city from violence among one another. Parris has received several awards for this role. Also in 2015, Parris got a lead role in Where Children Play . In May 2016 it was announced that Parris was in discussion for the lead role in the film Buffalo Soldier Girl , who tells the story of a woman who disguises herself as a man to contribute to the American Civil War as the African American Buffalo Soldier .

In late June 2020, Teyonah Parris became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
