Colman Domingo Jason (* 28. November 1969 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor , dancer , playwright , theater director and singer .

Life

Colman Domingo was born on November 28, 1969 in Pennsylvania , Philadelphia , to Edith and Clarence Bowles into a working class family. He trained at Temple University , then went to San Francisco and began his acting career on the stage. In his first appearance Domingo played a boy from the high school , which of AIDS dies. In 1995 Domingo made his first film appearance in Timepiece .

Two years later the actor was approached by a theater director whether he would also be interested in writing his own play. Despite an initial refusal, Domingo could be persuaded. Inspired by the book Brother to Brother , Domingo published his first play about African American gays. Eventually, the $ 500 play was self-funded by Domingo, who hired two actors, and became the Rhinoceros Theater's greatest success .

2003 Domingo came with an appearance in Henry V in the off-Broadway . With Well he made it to Broadway five years later. He appeared frequently in the television series Law & Order as well as in numerous offshoots of the series. In 2012 Domingo played the soldier Harold Green in Steven Spielberg's film Lincoln . His film career brought the African-American actor together with the likes of Spike Lee , whom he later referred to as "Big Brother".

Domingo didn't write another until eight years after his first play was published. He began writing A Boy and his Soul in a New York City bar during a time when his parents were having health issues and he was trying to prove himself an actor. The one-man piece A Boy and His Soul was inspired , among other things, by the Philly sound and is said to be about 80 percent autobiographical. It is set in West Philadelphia in the 1970s and 1980s. The play was originally performed on Broadway . The work was widely recognized in New York and was later performed at the Tricycle Theater in north-west London .

Domingo is also a singer and is known to his fans as "CocoSoulPower". His genres are soul and rock songs . In the Mission District in San Francisco , he has a large following. Colman Domingo won the 2011 Fred Astaire Award for Best Principal Dancer on Broadway. He has also received Tony , Obie , Lucille Lortel and GLAAD awards . Domingo received mostly positive reviews for his Broadway appearances in the musicals Passing Strange and The Scottsboro Boys .

In 2015 he had a supporting role in the first season of the AMC series Fear the Walking Dead . For the second season he was promoted to the main cast.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
