occupation

Buffalo Soldiers '44 is a 2008 war film that tells a little-known chapter of World War II : the deployment of African American soldiers on the front lines. In addition to Derek Luke , Joseph Gordon-Levitt , John Turturro , Valentina Cervi and Alexandra Maria Lara can also be seen. The US feature film was directed by Spike Lee . The film was shot in New York City and Tuscany, among others .

action

The film tells the story of four soldiers who belong to the 92nd Infantry Division , which is made up entirely of African Americans. When the four men are separated from their unit as a result of an attack in Tuscany, they have to retreat to a mountain village, where they are taken in by the locals. You are taking care of an Italian boy who was trapped in a house in a shell hit. Since a planned attack is expected on the part of the Germans, the American command center instructs the four soldiers over the radio to capture a German soldier in order to be able to confirm this.

A group of Italian partisans around the notorious “butterfly” also comes to the village with a German prisoner. Although they agree on an extradition, a traitor among the partisans kills the prisoner beforehand because he knows about his betrayal and his help in a mass murder by the Germans. When the village is attacked, only the black soldier Hector and the little boy Angelo survive.

The frame story tells how Hector kills the partisan traitor in 1983 when he happens to meet him again in New York City. The little Italian boy is now rich and has a lot of influence, so that he can bail Hector. In the final scene, Hector and Angelo meet in the Bahamas and Angelo gives Hector back the necklace he gave the little boy when he thought he was going to die during the attack.

meaning

The film deals with the racial issue in the United States at the time. The four soldiers have different opinions about the whites and the " Buffalo Soldiers ". What they all have in common is the hope for a better future for their children in the USA. In a flashback and some conversations, their views on inequality, togetherness and belief are expressed.

In addition, the massacre of the German Waffen SS in the village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema on August 12, 1944, in which between 400 and 560 Italian civilians were murdered, is made a subject of this war crime.
