Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall is a documentary of the director Spike Lee from the year 2016, the Michael Jackson's ascent from his years at the label Motown with the Jackson Five , his move to CBS , his partnership with producer Quincy Jones and recording of his seminal solo album Off the Wall . The various stages in Jackson's life are told in episodes, with episodes 7th to 16th providing background information on the singles from Off the Wall .
Lee uses material from Jackson's personal archives as well as interviews with musicians and family members in his documentation. Among others, Stevie Wonder , John Leguizamo , Lee Daniels , The Weeknd , Pharrell Williams , Misty Copeland , Kobe Bryant , Mark Ronson , John Legend , Questlove , LA Reid as well as Katherine , Joe , Marlon and Jackie Jackson are interviewed .
It 's Lee's second documentary about Michael Jackson after Bad 25 from 2012. The film premiered on January 24, 2016 at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival . It was released on February 26, 2016, along with a new edition of the album Off the Wall .
