42 - The True Story of a Sports Legend (Original Title: 42 ) is an American sports film directed by Brian Helgeland from 2013 . It's a biopic about baseball player Jackie Robinson , whose shirt number was 42.

The film is based on the biographical character of Jackie Robinson , who in 1947 was the first African American to integrate the most influential American professional baseball league ( MLB ), and Branch Rickey , the president and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers , who defied the gentlemen's agreement with his commitment , which enforced unwritten racial segregation in the two MLB leagues for over fifty years. The events focus on the years 1946 and 1947.
