Nicole Beharie (* 3. January 1985 in West Palm Beach , Florida as Nicole Browne ) is an American actress and singer . She is known for her roles in the films American Violet (2008) and Shame (2011) and for her role in the series Sleepy Hollow (2013-2016).

life and career

Nicole Beharie was established in January 1985 in West Palm Beach in the US state of Florida , the daughter of a Nigerian father and a Jamaican born mother. She attended Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg and graduated from the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities in 2003, a public boarding school in Greenville ( South Carolina ), and then in 2007 from the New York Juilliard School in drama. She made her acting debut in 2008 in the drama American Violet in the leading role as Dee Roberts . This role earned her an African-American Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress in 2009 and two nominations for the Black Reel Award . In 2008 she starred as Sarah Ward in Gary Fleder's sports film The Express, alongside Rob Brown .

In 2010 she took over Lifetime - Television Movie Sins of the Mother starred as Shay Hunter , an unsuccessful student who embarks on a journey to the relationship with her mother Nona ( Jill Scott ) improve. In 2011 she starred alongside Ken Duken in the romantic indie comedy Never More Without You . For this film, Beharie recorded a total of five songs, which were later released on the accompanying soundtrack. Also in 2011 she played in Steve McQueen's Shame the work colleague and meanwhile friend Marianne of the sex addict main character Brandon ( Michael Fassbender ). Her performance was praised by Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe and Beharie called "a miracle of natural transparency". In 2013, she played the role of Jackie's wife Rachel Isum Robinson in the biographical sports film 42 - The True Tale of a Sports Legend , which tells the life of baseball player Jackie Robinson . For this she was nominated for best leading actress at the NAACP Image Awards 2014. From 2013 to 2016 she portrayed in the Fox - Mystery series Sleepy Hollow - an adaptation of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - the main character of Lt. Abbie Mills . In the same role, she was seen in the crossover with the crime series Bones in 2015 .
