A first trailer was presented in March 2019. The film was shown for the first time on September 11, 2019 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival . The film was released in selected US cinemas on October 4, 2019. The cinema release in Germany should take place on April 2, 2020, but has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

reception

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12.

At the end of 2018, the film by Anne Thompson of the industry service IndieWire was counted among the 20 most anticipated films of the 2019 cinema year, but ultimately met with mixed feedback from the critics.

The film critic Antje Wessels notes on programmkino.de, the website of the Guild of German Film Art Theaters , unlike Departure to the Moon , Lucy in the Sky is not a classic space film, but mainly deals with the aftermath and the preparations for the next flight. Above all, the screenplay by Eliott DiGuiseppi and Brian C. Brown tells of the emotional excesses of the protagonist, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorders after her journey into space . With relatively little dialogue, staged with the help of some excellent visual gimmicks, camerawoman Polly Morgan captures Lucy's emotional forlornness in the completely normal world: “At some point you get the feeling that this woman has no place in the here and now and in the Everything is in better hands. ”However, you hardly learn anything about the main character. In the end, all those scenes are particularly interesting in which the viewer perceives Lucy's world from her perspective, the events remain strangely distant, but unfold a fascination if one can get involved in the staging.
