action

Miss Madrigal is applying for the position of educator for 16-year-old Laurel in an old house on the chalk cliffs on the English south coast. She does so even though six other waiting applicants refrained from doing so without even having spoken to Mrs. St. Maugham, the girl's grandmother.

Miss Madrigal makes a good impression at the interview, especially because of the calm and confidence with which she appears. Although she does not provide any certificates or references, she receives the position.

The eccentric old Mrs. St. Maugham still lives by the laws of the past and has never forgiven her daughter Olivia for getting married a second time after her husband's death. She persuades her granddaughter Laurel, who is living with her, that her mother has left her. With the help of the new teacher, she wants to bind the girl even more tightly.

But Miss Madrigal has her own ideas, she feels that her guardian needs a lot of love and understanding. But she met with little accommodation. From their first meeting, Laurel hates them. She also claims to have been mugged at the age of twelve and to have seen her father's suicide . In her efforts to help the child, she finds an ally in Maitland who can solve some of the stories made up.

To play a prank on Miss Madrigal and learn something about her, Laurel rummages in her room and finds a paint box with the initials CDW

One day Judge McWhirrey is a guest in the old house. During a conversation, he tries to analyze how, in his opinion, someone accused of murder feels. He relies on a previous case in which a woman was found guilty of murder. He even mentions her name: Constance Doris Wakeland. Miss Madrigal contradicts the judge's statements with passion.

Laurel remembers the initials inside the wooden paint box and takes Maitland into his confidence. Both are convinced that the educator is the said murderer. Nevertheless, the two do not reveal anything. Rather, Maitland asks Miss Madrigal to intercede with Mrs. St. Maugham that she gives her child back to Olivia, which she does. By chance Laurel overhears the conversation, is relieved that her mother loves her after all, and overjoyed when she comes to take her to her home.

The two women stay behind. The old lady sees herself robbed of her granddaughter and thus of her life. All that remains is the chalk garden and its stunted plants. In her grief she realizes that she can no longer do without Miss Madrigal's company. She sees that they need each other and promises her future companion to help them rehabilitate. When asked whether Miss Madrigal was rightly convicted, she receives a sibylline answer. Yet she affirms that she would not rest until she found out the truth.
