Georg Girardet

Georg Girardet (born September 7, 1942 in Kempten ) is a German lawyer and administrative officer. He was more than 17 years, Mayor and Councilor for Culture in Leipzig .

Life

Georg Girardet, who from the Essen publisher dynasty Girardet comes, began after high school to study law, which he with the promotion of Dr. iur. completed. From 1973 to 1977 he was a consultant in the vocational training department in the Federal Ministry of Education and Science , from 1978 to 1985 a consultant in the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in the GDR and from 1980 to 1985 its cultural consultant .

In 1985 he moved to the Senate Administration of West Berlin, where he was head of the department for the 750th anniversary celebrations in 1987 and for the events within the project “Berlin - European Capital of Culture 1988” in the Senate Administration for Cultural Affairs . In 1989 he was appointed to the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, initially as head of the personnel department, then the department “Art, Culture and Sport in Education”. On December 1, 1991 he was elected to his office as mayor and councilor for culture of the city of Leipzig, which he held for almost 18 years until May 29, 2009 (his last day of work). The festive retirement took place on May 19, 2009. Michael Faber was elected as his successor .
