David (Dave) Whistle (born January 27, 1966 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a former Canadian - British ice hockey player and current coach . His sons Brandon and Jackson play for the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League .

Career

As a player

From 1983 to 1987 Dave Whistle was active in the three leagues of the Canadian Hockey League for four different teams. From 1991 he played in the United Kingdom in the British Hockey League . In five years the striker was active for five teams and was one of the best scorers in the entire league. In 1996 he stayed in the team even after the Bracknell Bees moved to the Ice Hockey Superleague . After two more years, Whistle ended his playing career. During his time at Bracknell he was also a captain .

As a trainer

After the end of his playing career Whistle took over the Bracknell Bees the next year and led them to the championship in his second year as a coach. From 2000 he coached the Belfast Giants , who were also champions in their second year. In the 2002/03 season, the team won the title of British champions . 2003 took the Iserlohn Roosters Whistle as a successor to Greg Poss under contract. After a bad start and criticism of his training work and the handling of the team, he was fired after nine games. He then took over the Cardiff Devils for two seasons. In the 2005/06 season he replaced Paul Heavey with the Sheffield Steelers . In 2006 Whistle returned to Canada and trained the Alberni Valley Bulldogs from the British Columbia Hockey League .
