John Attard-Montalto

John Attard-Montalto (born February 7, 1953 in Sliema , Malta ) is a Maltese politician ( Labor ) and has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 . He bears the hereditary title of Barone di San Paolino .

Life

Attard-Montalto studied at the University of Malta , where he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1974 and a law degree in 1974 and a doctorate in law in 1979.

1987-2004 he worked for the social democratic Malta Labor Party (MLP) deputy in the Maltese Parliament, the Repreäsentantenhaus . During the rule of the MLP from 1996 to 1998 he was Minister for Industry and Economy.

In 1992 and 1996, and since 1998, Attard-Montalto was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

After the MLP's election defeat in 2003 and the resignation of party chairman Alfred Sant , Attard-Montalto ran for his post. However, a little later, Sant himself announced his renewed candidacy and was re-elected. Instead, Attard-Montalto was appointed an observer for the MLP at the European Parliament .

A year later, when Malta took part in the European elections for the first time after the EU expansion in 2004 , Attard-Montalto was elected as the top candidate for the MLP as one of five Maltese members of the European Parliament. He then renounced his seat in the Maltese House of Representatives. In the European elections in Malta in 2009 , Attard-Montalto again ran as the top candidate of the MLP and was also re-elected; However, he achieved the worst result of all five elected MPs.

In the European Parliament he belongs to the social democratic group S&D and is a member of the committee for constitutional questions .
