During the industrial revolution , the industrial production of cement also grew, in particular due to the sharp increase in construction activity at that time, so that one began to deal with the transport of cement in bulk. Initially, existing ships were used to transport cement. Since the 1910s, however, the first new builds of cement freighters have been built. As a cargo, cement is on the one hand very aggressive, on the other hand extremely sensitive to moisture and has a very high flowability.

From the outside, today's cement freighters are not immediately recognizable as such, as they usually have a structure for pumps and valve chambers that is visible on deck, which is similar to that of many product tankers and chemical tankers . The high level of structural specialization, which is structurally similar to a tanker, makes the transport of other bulk goods almost impossible with these special ships. Due to the similarities in the type of cargo handling and the external appearance, these ships are often referred to as cement tankers .
