family

Wigand Freiherr von Salmuth comes from the influential and wealthy Röchling family from Völklingen, who had ruled a steel and armaments company since the mid-19th century. Wigand von Salmuth's mother Alwine, b. Röchling, was a descendant of the industrialists Carl Röchling and Conte Giorgio Giulini . His father Curt Freiherr von Salmuth was in charge of the Leipzig branch of the Röchling Group.

Wigand von Salmuth is also a direct descendant of Leipzig's second superintendent, Heinrich Salmuth (1522–1576). He was the son-in-law of the first superintendent at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig after the introduction of the Reformation, Johann Pfeffinger (1494–1573). The Mannheim Chamber of Commerce President Philipp Diffené (1833–1903) was his great-great-grandfather, as was the sculptor Ernst Rietschel (1804–1861). His great-grandfather was his son Hermann Rietschel (1847–1914), who is considered to be the founder of heating and ventilation technology.

Wigand von Salmuth is the father of three sons, Kai Wigand (born on March 23, 1956), Alexander (born on May 21, 1955) and Johannes (born on February 23, 1966) as well as a daughter, Felicitas (born. on June 16, 1964).

Life

Salmuth's parents moved to Heidelberg in 1933. There Wigand von Salmuth passed his Abitur and began studying electrical engineering and business administration. After completing his studies, the graduate engineer began to work for the Giulini brothers in Ludwigshafen. There he was an authorized signatory and later a managing director. In 1978 he joined the Röchling Group as a managing partner. There he became a member of the supervisory and family committees as early as 1964, of which he was chairman from 1986 to 2000. From 1980 to 1999 he was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Rheinmetall AG and from 1973 to 2000 Managing Director of Aluminum-Werke Wutöschingen . On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, he retired in January 2001.

In the tradition of his ancestors, he also established a close connection to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig , which also has a window with the family's coat of arms and especially to the St. Thomas' Choir . His support made it possible to begin the complete restoration and repair of the St. Thomas Church and the Sauer organ . The acquisition of the Villa Thomana for the Forum Thomanum by the Canons of St. Thomae would not have been possible without his support. Because of his great merits, he was appointed canon of St. Thomae in 2002.

Wigand von Salmuth was 45 years old with Ingrid geb. von Mengersen (born April 19, 1932 - July 1, 2002) married. From this marriage there were four children.
