Curt Arthur Alfred Bernhard Ferdinand Georg Freiherr von Salmuth (born May 1, 1895 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , † August 29, 1981 in Heidelberg ) was a German industrialist .

family

Curt von Salmuth's father was the Berlin police chief Arthur von Salmuth , a descendant of the second superintendent of Leipzig, Heinrich Salmuth (1522–1576). He was the son-in-law of the first superintendent after the Reformation, Johann Pfeffinger (1494–1573).

Von Salmuth's mother Else was a daughter of the professor for ventilation and heating systems Hermann Rietschel (1847-1914). His father was the sculptor Ernst Rietschel (1804–1861).

Curt Freiherr von Salmuth married on July 12, 1924 in Saarbrücken Alwine, b. Röchling, a descendant of the industrialists Carl Röchling (only child of Eduard and Chiara Röchling) and Georg Otto Conte Giulini di Giulino (Giulini's only grandchild). The company of the industrial family had been a major steel and armaments company since the 19th century.

The four children, including son Wigand (1931-2006), came from his marriage to Alwine .

Life

Curt, born in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , spent his youth in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia , where he graduated from the humanistic grammar school. From 1914 to 1918 he was a soldier in the 1st Company of the Queen Elisabeth Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 3 in Charlottenburg. He studied law and economics at the University of Berlin; at the same time he was captain of the police force.

Hermann Röchling employed him in 1922 at the "Röchling'schen Eisen- und Stahlwerke GmbH" ( Völklinger Hütte ) in Völklingen . He was the managing director of the branches of “Gebr. Röchling KG ”in Hamburg , Leipzig and Vienna . In 1927 he took on tasks at the Röchling Group's headquarters in Saarbrücken and later in Mannheim . In 1933 he moved to Heidelberg . Georg Giulini appointed him on October 1, 1932, as managing partner of the chemical works Gebr. Giulini GmbH in Ludwigshafen am Rhein (until 1965) and the Aluminum-Werke Wutöschingen (AWW) (until 1972). After the end of the Second World War he succeeded in rebuilding the completely dismantled aluminum works in Wutöschingen (AWW).

He was a board member of the Association of the Chemical Industry . He held several supervisory board mandates within and outside the Röchling Group, such as at Osram and Rheinmetall .

Curt von Salmuth was born as a Protestant and converted to the Roman Catholic Church on September 16, 1948 . In 1956 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Cardinal Canali and invested on April 29, 1956 by Lorenz Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was appointed Grand Cross Knight in 1969 by Cardinal Eugène Tisserant and was President of the Southwest German Order Province from 1962 to 1970.

Curt von Salmuth was a member of the Berlin Club and friends with Ferdinand von Bredow , Major General of the Reichswehr and close colleague and confidante of Kurt von Schleicher . Bredow was murdered by the National Socialists in the course of the Röhm Putsch .

He was a member of the Stahlhelm , a union of former soldiers from the First World War. In 1934 he joined the Sturmabteilung (SA) . In 1941 he became a member of the NSDAP . In 1942 he was made honorary storm leader of the SA .
