Heinrich Salmuth, also Beringer (born March 2, 1522 in Schweinfurt , † March 20, 1576 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian and superintendent in Leipzig. One of the descendants was Wigand von Salmuth .

Life

Salmuth's father was called Georg Beringer, but Heinrich named himself after his stepfather Sebastian Salmuth. He attended school in Schweinfurt, came to Leipzig at the age of 14 and began to study there. His father Johann Pfeffinger was after the introduction of the Reformation superintendent in Leipzig and Salmuth received after completing his studies in 1552 his pastorate .

He received his doctorate from two faculties and was appointed fourth professor of theology in 1558. After Pfeffinger's death in 1573, he succeeded him as Professor Primarius, City Superintendent and Canon in Meißen . However, due to poor health, he was unable to stand out in public. In literary terms he became more effective, above all through his catechism sermons , which his son Johann Salmuth published posthumously in 1581.

Catechism sermons were already common earlier, but it was only through him that they became popular. There are also other collections of his sermons and numerous disputations by his students. In general he was a mild Philippist . In 1557 he was General Visitator for Thuringia . In 1565 he reorganized the University of Jena .
