Johann Pfeffinger , also Johannes Pfeffinger , (born December 27, 1493 in Wasserburg am Inn , † January 1, 1573 in Leipzig ) was an important Protestant theologian and reformer .

Life

After attending the Latin school in Annaberg (Amberg) in 1499, Pfeffinger was ordained an acolyte in 1515 and a subdeacon in Salzburg in 1518 . In the spring of 1518 he was ordained a priest . In the next few years he was a preacher in Reichenhall , Saalfelden and in 1521 a preacher in Passau .

In 1523 he was suspected of heresy because of sympathy with Luther's teaching and fled to Wittenberg , where he matriculated on November 15, 1524. From 1527 to 1530 he was in charge of his first pastor in Sonnewalde as a Protestant preacher. Years later he was expelled by the Bishop of Meissen and in 1530 took over the preaching position at the electoral monastery of Eicha near Naunhof . Johann Pfeffinger then became pastor in Belgern in 1532 and took part in the introduction of the Reformation in Leipzig.

In 1539, on Whit Tuesday, he gave the first Protestant sermon there in the Nikolaikirche . A year later, on August 24, 1540, he became superintendent of Leipzig and on September 6, 1541, he received the academic degree of Bachelor of Theology at the university . He now held numerous exegetical lectures and sermons, including in Glauchau with the task of carrying out the Reformation in the Schoenburger rule . On September 6, 1543, he became a licensed theology graduate and on October 10, 1543, he received his first doctorate in theology at the University of Leipzig . Six months later, on March 10, 1544, he began his work as a university professor. In his lectures he dealt primarily with Melanchthon's Loci communes .

Pfeffinger was dean of the theological faculty in 1549, 1552, 1555, 1557, 1561, 1565 and 1569, and in 1555 he was procurator of the Leipzig Alma Mater. In the same year he rose from the second to the professorship of theology. In 1542 he accompanied the introduction of the Reformation in the Schönburg region. In 1549 he became canon in Meißen, consistorial assessor and decemvir . With the thesis published in 1555 that man cooperates with the Holy Spirit in his conversion, Johann Pfeffinger triggered the synergistic dispute (1555–1560). This also establishes its current theological historical significance. In addition, Johann Pfeffinger is known as the author of the widespread “Trostbüchlein”, which he initially put together for himself in order to deal with the death of his deceased son.

In Leipzig- Connewitz , Pfeffingerstraße is named after the reformer.
