The villa after its completion in 1883

The historicist villa on the corner of Hillerstraße was built by Max Pommer from 1881 to 1883 based on Italian models as a home for the Leipzig merchant Friedrich Willibald Ledig.

The building, adorned with rich wall paintings, had a living room, dining room, lounge, veranda, kitchen with pantry and toilet on the ground floor, living room, master and triangular room, three bedrooms, guest room, bathroom and toilet on the upper floor. A cloakroom and girls' room were in the attic; in the basement there was a wine cellar and a laundry room with a tiling chamber. The kitchen and basement were connected by a separate servants' staircase.

In the foyer on the ground floor there are many design echoes of old Pompeian wall styles. These are particularly evident in the division of the wall surfaces into individual cuboid zones with an imitation marble surface, and in black-framed areas in typical Pompeian red. The imitation wooden ceiling was designed with templates. The former salon and the former living room of the Ledig family were combined during the renovation to create the new Freiherr von Salmuth chamber music hall . These two rooms have almost been restored to their original appearance with gilded stucco work and ornamentation covered with gold leaf.

In the foyer on the first floor there is also an imitation wooden ceiling with stencil painting, which is provided with a square light shaft in the middle as an additional light source for the stairwell.

Many design details were uncovered in the course of the renovation in accordance with listed buildings, restored according to findings or redesigned in line with the construction period. The top floor was completely rebuilt. The basement rooms, which had been eaten away by dry rot before the renovation, were also redesigned.

Rehearsal center in the forum thomanum

As the St. Thomas' Choir urgently needed more space, the villa was acquired in 2005 by the Canons of St. Thomae Foundation with funds from Canon Wigand Freiherr von Salmuth . After extensive renovation, it was made available to the forum thomanum , an internationally oriented educational center for the St. Thomas Choir and St. Thomas School , which was to be built by 2012 .

The expansion and renovation and extensive restoration of Villa Thomana planned by the Leipzig architects' office Weis & Volkmann began in March 2007. The total costs, which also include the purchase of the house, amounted to approx. 2 million euros, including the funding from urban monument protection . On November 19, 2008 , the Leipzig Cultural Foundation awarded the client the second prize in the Hieronymus Lotter competition for the preservation of monuments for the restoration of the neglected villa in accordance with the listed buildings .

The city of Leipzig, as the sponsor of the St. Thomas Choir, rented the building and, after the opening ceremony on May 22, 2008, made it available to the choir as part of the forum thomanum as a rehearsal center and official seat of the St.

Since the renovation there are the following rooms in the Villa Thomana:

  • On the ground floor: the Freiherr von Salmuth chamber music hall , a salon, several classrooms
  • On the 1st floor: the rooms of the Thomaskantor and his employees with a view of the Thomasschule and Alumnat, classroom with preparation room for voice training and adjoining rooms
  • On the top floor: meeting rooms, classrooms, music library and office of the support group of the Thomanerchor
  • In the basement: Thomaner's leisure area with fitness room, editing of the Thomaner's website KastenJournal , model railway room and technical ancillary rooms such as district heating transfer point etc. a.

The Villa Thomana is also used by the forum thomanum day care center, which was built on a part of the property right next to the villa according to a design by the architect Anne Träger. The Leipzig vocational training center is responsible for the day-care center . For the construction of the day care center, investments of 1.9 million euros were required.
