Margaret Steinitz

Margaret Anne Steinitz (born October 1951 ) is a British choir singer and artistic director of the London Bach Society .

Career

She graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London . In 1972 she became a choir singer with the London Bach Society, and later took on leadership positions. In 1976 she married the conductor Paul Steinitz . After the death of her husband on April 21, 1988, she founded the London Bach Festival and the magazine Bach Notes and campaigned for Bach research. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, she established closer contacts in Leipzig and invited the St. Thomas Choir to tour Great Britain. Steinitz served on the City of Westminster Arts Council and was a trustee of the British Dresden Trust. She is a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the British-German Association . She is also involved in the Worshipful Company of Musicians .

Honors

  • In 2001 she was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music .
  • In 2006 she received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, in recognition of her services in promoting Bach's music since German unification in 1990.
