Mike Schmeitzner

Mike Schmeitzner (born July 29, 1968 in Dresden ) is a German historian who primarily deals with contemporary history.

Life

After graduating from EOS “Friedrich Engels” Dresden-Süd in 1987 , Schmeitzner initially worked at VEB Robotron in 1987/88 . He then studied history, German and educational sciences between 1988 and 1994 at the Pedagogical University of Dresden and the Technical University of Dresden , which he completed with the first state examination and the academic degree of a Magister Artium . From 1994 to 1997 Schmeitzner was a graduate fellow of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung , his doctorate on the Saxon social democrat Alfred Fellisch , supervised by Karlheinz Blaschke , was accepted in 1999 by the Philosophical Faculty of the TU Dresden. Since 1998 he has been working as a research assistant at the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism in Dresden. In addition, Schmeitzner has been entrusted with a teaching position at the Institute for History at the TU Dresden since 2001. From October 2010 to September 2011 he was the professor for modern and contemporary history at the University of Erfurt . In the 2013 summer semester, Schmeitzner was awarded the Venia Legendi for modern and contemporary history by the Philosophical Faculty of the TU Dresden as part of a cumulative habilitation process . With effect from March 1, 2018, he was appointed adjunct professor at the Institute for History at TU Dresden.

Schmeitzner's research focuses on the history of the Weimar Republic , the Third Reich , the Soviet zone of occupation and the early GDR as well as historical research on parliamentarism and totalitarianism . Among other things, he is a member of the history forum of the SPD (successor to the historical commission of the SPD party executive ) and is a member of the scientific advisory boards of the Saxon Memorials Foundation and the Reich President Friedrich Ebert Memorial as well as the editorial board of the magazine Dresdner Hefte .

In the state elections in Saxony in 1999 , Schmeitzner ran unsuccessfully at number 26 on the list of the SPD Saxony and as a direct candidate in constituency 48 (Weißeritzkreis), in which Andrea Hubrig won the mandate.
