Society for Music Theory

The Society for Music Theory (GMTH) is the German-speaking representation of music theorists active in teaching, studying, artistic practice and research, founded in Berlin in 2000 .

structure

The Society for Music Theory (GMTH) sees itself as an interest group for German-language music theory. The GMTH serves as a forum for exchange, it promotes the subject of music theory as an artistic-scientific-pedagogical university discipline and maintains a dialogue with neighboring disciplines ( music pedagogy , composition , improvisation , musical aesthetics , music psychology and other sub-disciplines of musicology ).

The GMTH currently has around 480 members. Most of the members come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the rest mainly from neighboring European countries, from the USA and Canada. Various (research) institutes are also members of the society. The exchange with the European sister companies is maintained.

The GMTH organizes an annual congress, publishes the online magazine Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (ZGMTH), which appears three or twice a year and is also published in print as an annual volume (Olms-Verlag). The ZGMTH is thematically specialized in questions of music theory as a discipline between composition, improvisation, musicology and music education. The GMTH also supports publications and artistic and scientific projects and awards grants. Since 2010, the GMTH has been holding an annual essay competition aimed at promoting young talent in the field of music theory by participating in a written discourse. An artistic competition has been added since 2012.
