Eszter Fontana

Eszter Fontana (* 1948 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian musicologist , restorer of musical instruments and university teacher .

Live and act

Eszter Fontana comes from a Budapest family of musicians. From 1966 to 1970 she completed an internship and trained as a restorer of musical instruments at the University of Leipzig. After completing her studies, she was responsible for the musical instruments and clocks in the Hungarian National Museum from 1974 to 1990 . She made further studies at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where she received her doctorate in 1993. From 1995 to 2001 she had a teaching position at the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" (Leipzig) for an artistic diploma course in "Early Music".

From 1995 to 2013 she was director of the Museum for Musical Instruments at the University of Leipzig . In 2006 she was appointed adjunct professor there. Her research focuses on the history of musical instrument making and the manufacturing technology for musical instruments. But it is particularly dedicated to the history of Hungarian musical instrument making, the sources of musical instrument use in Hungary and Saxon instrument making in the 16th-18th centuries. Century. She has written numerous publications in this area. The history of the Museum of Musical Instruments at the University of Leipzig is also one of her important fields of work.
