Eugène Galien-Laloue (born December 11, 1854 in Paris , † April 18, 1941 in Chérence ) was a French painter who is particularly known for his Parisian street scenes from the Belle Epoque .

Life

Eugène Galien-Laloue was born as the first of a total of nine sons. When he was 16, his father, the painter Charles Laloue, died. He then had to leave school and start working as a notary's assistant. In 1871 he took part in the Franco-German War as a volunteer . In 1874 he worked as a draftsman for the French railway company, through which he also got to know rural France. In 1876 he exhibited a painting for the first time. Since Galien-Laloue was contractually bound by his real name to a certain gallery, he also used six pseudonyms: “L. Dupuy "," Juliany "," E. Galiany "," Lievin "," E. Lemaitre ”and“ Dumoutier ”.

Galien-Laloue was married three times, first to Flore Bardin († 1887), then to her sister Ernestine Bardin († 1925) in 1892, and finally to her sister Claire Bardin in 1930. From his first marriage he had a son Fernand and from the second marriage a daughter Flore, with whom he spent the last years of his life. Galien-Laloue worked as a painter well into old age; It was only when he had to leave Paris in 1940 due to the war that he broke his arm on the way and has not been able to paint since then. The following year he died in his daughter's summer house in Chérence, 70 km west of Paris.

Paris street scene

Galien-Laloue is particularly valued for his street scenes from the lively Paris of the Belle Epoque , pictures that have not only artistic but also documentary value. These Parisian scenes were mostly painted in small format in gouache and were already very popular during his lifetime, also with British and American buyers.

In addition, Galien-Laloue also painted rural scenes, especially river landscapes and village views. A catalog of his complete works is in progress; the first volume was published in 1999. Four to five-figure sums are now being achieved at auctions for Galien-Laloue's paintings.
