The Kaunitz family (Czech z Kounic ) was an old Bohemian aristocratic family, which belonged to the Kaunitz family, as its ancestral coat of arms with the crossed water lily stalks indicates that it has the same origins as the Silesian Stosch and the Bohemian Augezdecz, the Martinic , the Talmberg , the Richnowsky von Reichenau and the Černčický from Kácov is. The common ancestor is said to go back to the Werschowitz (Vrsovci, Wrschowetze on Vrsovice near Laun an der Eger), probably a branch of the Přemyslids .

The documented lineage of those von Kaunitz begins with Zawiss von Augezdecz and Kunicz, 1327–1333 chief chamberlain in the Kingdom of Bohemia, a son of Hroznata von Husicz, burgrave of Prague, married to a daughter of Zawiss von Krumlov from the house of the Witigonen .

The family was also mentioned in writing in the 14th and 15th centuries as lords in Troppau , which were divided into two branches: Stošové z Kounic and Šiškové z Kounic. The main line branched out into the line of the Counts and Princes of Kaunitz-Rietberg and Kaunitz-Rietberg-Questenberg . With the inheritance of the imperial county Rietberg in 1699 and 1726, the family rose to the high nobility .
