Uherský Brod ( German Hungarian Brod ) is a town in the Zlínský kraj region in the Czech Republic . It is located in the Olšava valley opposite the confluence of the Nivnička .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1140 as settlement Brod or Na brodě : The place name is derived from the ford at which the settlement was founded at a water crossing point over the Olšava. ( Brod means “ford” in various Slavic languages.) In 1272 King Ottokar II. Přemysl appointed Brod to the royal city . In 1509, Vladislav II gave the city to Johann von Kunowitz ( Jan z Kunovic ), whereby it lost the privileges of a royal city. In the 16th century the city experienced a great economic boom, which was hampered by the invasions of the Hungarians in the 17th century. A further decline occurred during the Thirty Years War , in which the city was largely destroyed and most of the evangelical citizens were driven out.
In the second half of the 17th century Brod was repopulated. In addition to Jews, there were also many Germans who made up the largest proportion of the population from the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. In the 19th century the city consisted of three districts, the center, the Jewish part and the suburb, which together had about 3,000 inhabitants. Mainly Czech and German craftsmen, businessmen and employees lived in the town center. The suburb had an agricultural character.
The city is considered to be one of the possible birthplaces of Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius), to whom the place dedicates an exceptionally extensive museum. The twinning with the Dutch municipality of Naarden is due to the fact that Comenius was buried there.
On February 24, 2015, a 62-year-old resident killed eight people with pistol gunshots and injured a further number of people in a restaurant in the city . He then shot himself.

The arms factory Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod was founded in Uherský Brod in 1936 and is still in operation today. A photovoltaic open space system has been in operation since 2010 .
The Uherský Brod brewery has existed since 1894.
The world market leader for filtration, Mann + Hummel , has been operating a cabin filter factory in Uhersky Brod since 2005.
