Life

Googoosh was born in Tehran as the daughter of Azerbaijani immigrants. At the age of three Googoosh was already on stage with her father Saber Atashin , himself an acrobat and artist, and quickly became a child star. At the beginning of the 1960s, Googoosh's singing inspired Iranian composers to create a new style of Iranian pop music , a mixture of Persian poetry and others. a. Blues , jazz , latin , rock and disco music . With the help of composers like Varoojan, Shamiaizadeh and Farid Zaland , the Googooshs chansons became hits and she became a cult figure on the Iranian pop scene in the 1970s. With her hair look and clothing style, she also influenced the respective fashion trends of her time.

At the age of 20, Googoosh took part in several international music festivals and in 1971 won first prize in Cannes for her songs Retour de la ville and J'entends crier je t'aime . In 1972 she won the first prize at the music festival in Carthage ( Tunisia ). For the San Remo Music Festival (1973) she also registered twelve chansons in Italian and Spanish , which became an overnight success.

Her Spanish song Desde hace tiempo became a hit in South America in 1973 . In October 1977 she sang the song Tavalodat Mobarak in the palace in Tehran at the birthday party of the Iranian Crown Prince Cyrus Reza Pahlavi .

After the Iranian Revolution of 1979 , Googoosh and other singers were banned from performing in public and their musical material was banned. Since she did not initially intend to leave Iran, she adapted to the new living conditions.

In the early 1990s she met her then husband Masoud Kimiai , who led her to a private recording studio for their first meeting. There she began to sing again for the first time after the years of 'Silence'. In 2000 Googoosh left Iran and started a world tour. Her long absence from the stage resulted in sold-out concert halls - an expression of her enormous popularity among Iranians and non-Iranians.

Her repertoire amounts to over 250 Persian-language and 55 international songs. Googoosh is a symbol of national pride for many Iranians at home and abroad. In 2001, a year after her big comeback at the sold-out Air Canada Center in Toronto, Iranian-American director Farhad Zamani released a biographical documentary entitled Googoosh: Iran's Daughter .
