Masoud Kimiai (born July 29, 1941 in Tehran , Iran ; Persian مسعود کیمیایی) is an Iranian screenwriter and film director .

Life

Kimiai received his bachelor's and master's degrees in sociology from Tehran University . In his master's thesis he dealt with the sociological literary theme of women in contemporary Persian novels.

His entry into the film industry was the film Khodahafez Tehran (1966), on which he worked as an assistant director to Samouel Khachikian . In 1968 his first directorial work, Biganeh bia , was released, followed by one of his most famous films, the drama Gheisar . Through this and the following directorial works Reza motori (1970) and Dash akol (1971) Kimiai established himself as one of the leading directors of the New Iranian Cinema of the 1970s. His works are characterized by a specific visual style, among other things characterized by a rapidly changing camera work. In them he takes up topics such as male friendship and loyalty, defense of honor and vengeance through vigilante justice. His characters, who represent these values, often come from the working class or lower middle class. Kimiai wrote many of the scripts himself, based on his own ideas, but in Dash akol he takes up literary material by Sadegh Hedayat . He often works with the same actors (including Behrouz Vossoughi ) and the same staff (including cameraman Nemat Haghighi ). While Kimiai was successful in Iran, he was unable to establish himself in western countries, partly due to his traditionalism. However, some of his films were also shown there at festivals. At the 1991 Berlinale he received an honorable mention for The Snake's Bite ( Dandan-e-mar ).
