history

Church of the Assumption

The first written mention of Schumitz was around 1380, when Hynek von Waldstein sold the village to Jan von Meziříčí. Aleš von Cimburg acquired the property from this in 1397 . He was followed by Jan von Cimburg, who sold Schumitz with the farm and the mill in 1406 to Martin von Hirsfeld. The place name Šumice has been handed down since 1447 . The following owners were the brothers Tas , Dobeš and Beneš von Boskowitz , who left Šumice in 1471 to Klement von Bráník. In 1477 he sold Šumice including the farm and the tavern for 1000 Hungarian guilders to Jan Plankar, who sold the goods to his lordship in Brod . Since 1509 the lords of Kunovice owned the estate. The first news about a church in Šumice, which served as a Protestant place of worship at the end of the 16th century, comes from 1526. At the beginning of the 17th century, Šumice was a large village and consisted of 110 houses, a courtyard, two mills and a tavern. The village was burned down on June 16, 1605 when Stephan Bocskai's troops invaded . In 1611, Jetřich von Kunovice sold Uherský Brod with all accessories to Ulrich von Kaunitz . The Catholic parish in Šumice was renewed in 1651 and the church was consecrated to the Virgin Mary. In 1663 the Turks invaded Šumice under Ahmed Köprülü and murdered 48 residents; at the same time they drove away 38 horses, 138 cattle and 1167 sheep. In 1671 the village was called Ssumitz / Šumice . In the hoof register of 1676, 96 properties are shown for Šumice, 16 of which were desolate. Other owners included Dominik Andreas I von Kaunitz from 1676 to 1705 , Count Anton Wenzel Kaunitz , Austrian State Chancellor from 1746 to 1794 , and Alois Wenzel von Kaunitz from 1812 to 1848. Between 1801 and 1817 the ailing church was repaired, including the construction of a new wooden tower. Until the middle of the 19th century, Šumice was always subject to Uherský Brod.

After the abolition of patrimonial Šumice / Schumitz formed from 1850 a municipality in the district administration Uherský Brod . At this time, the character of Šumice changed from an agricultural place to a mason village. The church was rebuilt in 1861 with financial support from Albrecht von Kaunitz, a stone church tower was built and the entrance area was extended. The Wlarabahn was built between 1883 and 1887 ; In 1888 she started traffic. In 1911 there were 216 masons in Šumice, the majority of whom emigrated to the metropolises of Budapest , Vienna and Hamburg . In 1919, Šumice was flooded by a heavy flood of the Olšava. 71 houses and 32 barns as well as the railway bridges were destroyed and another 50 houses were damaged. In 1927 and 1928 the Olšava and Ovčírka rivers were regulated and the wetlands in the direction of Nezdenice and Rudice were drained. In 1950 the construction of a new church began, of which only the foundation walls could be completed due to the political situation. The building material procured for the church was used for a culture house and a cowshed. After the dissolution of the Okres Uherský Brod, the municipality was assigned to the Okres Uherské Hradiště in late 1960 . In 1961, a gymnasium for the elementary school was built on the space provided for the new church. In 1997 Pope John Paul II consecrated the foundation stone for the construction of a new church in Prague. Since 2005, Šumice has had a coat of arms and a banner.
