Theodor Lente (born March 16, 1605 in Osnabrück , † February 20, 1668 in Copenhagen ) was a German chancellor, royal Danish-Norwegian councilor and diplomat.

Life

The son of the lawyer and syndic of the knighthood of the Osnabrück Monastery, Hugo Lente and his wife Katharina Hinricking, had received their initial training from their father and attended school in his hometown. In 1622 he went to high school in Hamburg and in March 1625 began studying law at the University of Rostock . In 1629 he moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he attended the lectures of Konrad Carpzov and Jeremias Reusner . Soon he went to the University of Jena , where Dominicus Arumaeus and Friedrich Hortleder were his teachers.

Following his studies, he had his first practical experience at the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer . He became court master of a nobleman and traveled with his sons to France, where he met Hugo Grotius, among others . After further trips through England and Holland, he came to Holstein in 1635 and settled in Kiel . In 1637 he moved to Bremervörde , became Danish-Norwegian chamber secretary and councilor to King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway . During the conquest of the city of Stade he was captured by the Swedes for a few months and only released again after the peace of Brömsebro . In the process he lost a large part of his belongings.

In 1648 he followed a call to the court of Friedrich III. from Denmark and Norway to Copenhagen. After serving the Danish royal family for twenty-three years, he was appointed German Chancellor and Assessor of the State and Supreme Court by the King in 1660. Above all, his state of health ensured that from 1665 he was bedridden due to dropsy and could no longer carry out his state business. Therefore, he was replaced as Chancellor in 1667 by Johann Christoph von Körbitz (born August 30, 1612 in Dresden, † August 20, 1682 in Copenhagen). Lente had gained great influence at the Danish court. However, he had been corruptible and had amassed a great fortune.

family

Lente had married on September 14, 1635 with Magdalena († March 30, 1670), the daughter of the Danish-Norwegian council and canon in Schleswig Johann Schönbach and his wife Regina Finckelthausen. The marriage resulted in four sons and three daughters, of whom three sons and one daughter outlived the father. Friedrich Lente (* 1639 Bremervörde; † 1677), Christian von Lente (1649–1725) and Johann Hugo von Lente (1640–1718) are known.
