Peace of Brömsebro
The peace of Brömsebro was on July 13th . / 23 August 1645 greg. closed and ended the Torstensson War against Denmark , which the Swedes began without a formal declaration of war , which took place between 1643 and 1645 and can be regarded as part of the Thirty Years War .
The peace negotiations were initiated on the initiative of the French diplomat Gaspart Coignet de la Thuillerie after the Swedish successes in February 1645 in the small town of Brömsebro . Brömsebro is located in Blekinge , which was still Danish at the time, on the border with Småland in Sweden . The place is today in the municipality of Karlskrona . On the Swedish side, the negotiations were led by Axel Oxenstierna , while the Danish delegation was led by Chancellor Corfitz Ulfeldt . The Netherlands on the Swedish side and France as mediator also took part in the negotiations.
In the peace treaty Denmark had to cede Jämtland , Härjedalen , Gotland and Ösel to Sweden. The Danish heir to the throne, Friedrich, as Friedrich II. Administrator of the Archbishopric of Bremen and the Bishopric of Verden , also had to cede his possessions to Sweden. Sweden Halland was also leased for 30 years. In addition, the right to duty-free passage through the Øresund was extended to all provinces in Sweden, so that Swedish ships no longer had to pay a sound duty . Hamburg was exempted from paying the Elbe tariff .
