history

The village was probably founded in the middle of the 13th century during the colonization of the area by German settlers under Boresch II von Riesenburg . It was north-east of the Stranypass, over which the Hungarian Trail led from Moravia to Hungary. The brook Nemtschi potok was first mentioned in 1261 in the founding document of the Cistercian monastery Smilheim as the limit of monastery ownership. However, this document turned out to be a later falsification of the monastery. After Boresch fell out of favor and was executed in 1277, his South Moravian possessions fell back to the sovereign. Originally the village was as Nemec , Nemci , Nemtschi or Nempczi called, this name probably derives from its German inhabitants ago. In the course of time the place was named as Hornye Niempcie , Horni Njemczy , Horni Niemčzi and Horni Niemc to distinguish Suché Němcí and Dolní Němčí . 22 noble families took turns as owners of the goods. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the village partially belonged to Gansberg Castle . There is evidence of a branch church in Horní Němčí since 1354, which successively belonged to the parishes in Velká , Uherský Brod and Strání . After Strání was burned down by the Hussites in 1427 , the parish was moved from Strání to Horní Němčí. Under the lords of Kunowitz Horní Němčí was attached to the Ostroh rule in the 16th century . From 1566 Horní Němčí had neo-utraquist pastors. After the Battle of the White Mountain , Jan Bernhard von Kunowitz's goods were confiscated and Ostroh and all its accessories were given to the Gundaker von Liechtenstein in 1625 . The church, which has been closed since 1622, was entrusted to the Catholic pastor of Ostroh in 1627. Since 1640 the pastor of Hluk and from 1654 the Nivnick pastor took care of the pastoral care. In 1671 the church in Horní Němčí became a branch church of Nivnice. In the 17th century the name of the place changed to Hornonemczy , Horniemtz , Horniemtsch and Horněmeč . In 1751 a locality was set up in Horní Němčí, which on November 7, 1763 was elevated to a parish. Slavkov has been parish since then . Until the middle of the 19th century, the village always remained subordinate to Ostroh and the Liechtensteiners.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Horněmčí / Horniemtsch 1850 a municipality in the district administration Hradisch . In 1923 the Czech place name was changed to Horní Němčí . During the German occupation, the German name Ober Niemtsch emerged from this. Between April 17 and 26, 1945, heavy tank battles between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army took place around Ober Niemtsch. 10 residents as well as 29 German and 27 Soviet soldiers died. Another six residents later fell victim to ammunition lying around. Ten of the 342 houses in the village were destroyed in the fighting. 33 more burned out and 36 were badly damaged. Furthermore, two bridges were destroyed. The church also suffered minor damage. Horní Němčí was one of the worst war-damaged places in the Uherské Hradiště district. After the end of the Second World War, the reconstruction of the village began. A collection of donations for the war victims brought in 28,000 crowns, whereby the National Committee collected the money exclusively in Horní Němčí. The assessment of the damage and payment of the funds by the district administration was very slow. In the following time about 300 residents left the village and moved to the border areas . Some of them took over farms in Drnholec , Litobratřice , Hevlín and Dolní Dunajovice , others moved to Zighartice in Moravian Silesia . In 1949 the community was assigned to the new Okres Uherský Brod. After the cancellation of the Okres Uherský Brod, Horní Němčí came back to the Okres Uherské Hradiště in late 1960 . The community has had coats of arms and banners since 2003.
