history

Already in the Chronica Boemorum of Cosmas of Prague the settlement Hluk or Latin was Hlucium in the years 1099 and 1116 mentioned. The first documentary mention dates from 1294, at that time the owner was Ulrich II von Neuhaus . After his death, the fief fell back to the Bohemian crown and Wenceslaus II left the place to Zdislav Měšec in 1303. As a result, the rulership changed between different noble families. From 1460 to 1506 these were those of Zástřizly and then those of Kunovice. In 1525 Ludwig II raised Hulken to a market town. In 1625 Gundaker von Liechtenstein acquired the dominions of Hulken and Ostroh . In 1663 and 1683 the Turks looted the place. During the Kuruzenkrieg , Franz II. Rákóczi’s troops raided the town several times in 1703, 1705, 1708 and 1709. But Hulken was not spared from fires either, in 1663, 1709, 1838 and 1857 parts of the village burned down. Until the abolition of patrimonial rule, Hulken remained in the possession of the Liechtenstein family.

In 1970 Hluk was promoted to town.
