Due to its special position as a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China or as a former British crown colony, Hong Kong , like Macau, has its own license plates .

General system

Their format and appearance are based on the license plates of the former colonial power Great Britain . There is a white license plate on the front of the vehicle and a yellow one on the rear. The font color is black. The inscription usually consists of one to two letters and a maximum of five digits, although the letters can also be missing. Due to the small area of Hong Kong, there is no need for regional coding, so that the license plates (AA, AB, AC, etc.) are output continuously. The letters I, O and Q are not used due to the risk of confusion. In February 2012, the RG series was achieved. The combinations BA and BF were once skipped and could later be auctioned. Other letter combinations are reserved for special purposes. The combinations FU and FV are used for signs that are given to Chinese vehicles that are in Hong Kong. Administration vehicles have the letters AM (English a d m inistration) on their license plates.

License plate auctions

Low numbers and special, easy-to-remember combinations of digits such as 11111 or palindromes (13331) are not issued continuously, but are auctioned by the administration.

Since 2006 there has also been an option in Hong Kong to obtain a license plate of your choice in which the combination with the exception of I, O and Q can be freely selected. In order to get inscriptions like I LOVE U anyway, I and O are replaced by the very similar looking digits 1 and 0. Custom license plates will be auctioned by the administration at a minimum price of 500 HKD (approx. 50 euros). The mentioned combination 1 L0VE U was sold for 1.4 million HKD (approx. 140,000 euros).

Special marks

Dealer license plates have red letters on a white background. They show the letter T followed by a maximum of five digits.

The police chief's license plate number shows 1. The head of government of the Special Administrative Region (Chief Executive) has the Hong Kong coat of arms on his vehicle instead of a license plate . Until 1997, the Hong Kong governor's car featured the British Edwardian crown .

License plate for crossing the border to China

Vehicles from Hong Kong entering or leaving China are given a license plate for the Chinese province of Guangdong as an additional license plate . These black and white signs start with 粤 Z as coding for Hong Kong and Macau and end with 港 for Hong Kong and 澳 for Macau. See also license plate (China) .
